After enjoying our last stay in a hotel for the next few weeks, we left in the morning for the Californian capital of Sacramento. It started with a few rough hills and then flattened out. At mile 40, I was behind another cyclist when the pace line slowed and I crossed tires on the left. Unfortunately, I veered right and hit wheels only to flip over my bicycle as I was going 22 mph down a road. I skidded to a halt, and after a quick check, I got up and jumped right back onto my bicycle. Although I had moderate road rash (scrapes) on my right leg and shoulder and a few bruises, I felt fine and pushed through the last 20 miles of the day with my group. We were the second group to arrive today. We rolled into the capital with a police escort and took pictures in front of the capitol building. It was only as I rode down the main avenue that I realized I had a shooting pain in my right elbow. I was accompanied to the emergency room to be told I had a non-displaced radial head hairline fracture and was advised to get off the bicycle for the next 2-3 weeks by the attending on staff. My arm can’t bend past a certain range, but once the swelling dies down and with adequate rest, it should go back to normal. If it gets worse, however, this might be the end of my summer cycling.
