Day 40 -- Dubuque, IA

Wow, what a day! A few stories:

1) As we were finishing up the 90-mile ride, we rode into Dubuque, IA. The road we were supposed to ride down was blocked because someone was being held hostage at gunpoint. The irony is that a couple of miles down, we saw 2 gun stores.

2) We went down the steepest hill yet. It must have been at least a 12% grade, if not more. We were so scared because the hill was short and went right into a busy street. Some people ended up walking down; I went with one foot unclipped and both hands pulling the brakes as hard as I could. I was still going 10 mph downhill.

3) We rode across a sign in the small town of DeWitt where two original transnational highways merged. Apparently, the straight way across the country is only 3,250. Because of our detour to Chicago, we’re actually going 600 to 700 miles more. Yikes.

4) We are sleeping over at Camp Albrecht Acres tonight. Even though we were exhausted after the ride, we mustered up the courage for a 2-hour costume dance party. It was an incredible amount of fun! I was really happy because I found a way to engage someone who had limited mobility in the dance by giving them drumsticks with which they kept tempo. To top it all off, there were a lot cute British counselors working at the camp.

5) Last but not least, we went to the Field of Dreams today. Enough said.
