Day 48 -- South Bend, IN

I’m writing from a McDonalds in downtown South Bend. Three of the riders are competing in one of our daily “challenges.” Today’s challenge? Eat 10,000 calories in two hours. It’s absolutely hilarious. I am pretty sure they are all in hyperglycemic shock because they are acting quite drunk. I tried to convince them not to do it, but hey, what’s healthy advice when your reputation is at stake? One of them already gave up at 5,400 calories and is currently in the bathroom. The other is at 6,675 and a clear winner. He is about to give up and has been munching on a chicken sandwich for the past 20 minutes. The last is going strong and steady…at 2,400 calories and with 20 minutes left on the timer. The best part yet is that if the challenge is not complete, they have agreed to put icy hot on their chamois tomorrow instead of chamois butter. If that doesn’t ring an alarm, it should.

In other news, we rode out of Chicago today. We had an awesome breakfast provided by a past Project Manager near the Chicago Yacht Club. The first twenty miles were on a scenic bike path by the shoreline. The next twenty through the reputed worst city in America—Gary, Indiana. We were supposed to have a police escort through the city, but they were too busy to come help us. Let’s just say there weren’t many crew stops in town. Also, Indiana has horrible roads.

The knights of Columbus (a catholic organization) kindly made us pasta for dinner. We’re staying in a church again tonight, right by the famed Notre Dame campus.
