I’ve really enjoyed cycling for the past few days. The roads are beautiful. The rides are a perfect 60 to 70 miles. The people in my pace lines have been great. I’ve even gotten some positive comments on my cycling ability (like today when I pulled for 14 miles at a good pace of 23 mph and my friend Scott said—“Wow! Are you signing up for the Tour de France or what? I could barely keep up.” It made me smile).
We had a great afternoon in the neighborhood surrounding Michigan State University. The families of Michigan Pi Alphas are lodging us in their homes (5 of them) and are right next to a park. We spent the afternoon/evening lounging around and spending some time with the families, their dogs (a lot of them are partaking in a program where they train labs to assist people with disabilities—it made me miss my dog, Marouff), and running errands. I’ve done laundry, updated my blog, and taken care of myself (I re-shaved my head yesterday, by the way).
They also had care packages for us and made t-shirts! They thought of everything. We got Chap Stick, some trail mix, food and a letter from cyclists last year. We wrote one for the next generation in return. The letter from last year made me really appreciate our team. They got their project manager kicked off in the week before Chicago and had a chaotic and disorganized end of the trip. Apparently they didn’t even make rack point for most of the days after the incident because of mismanagement (which we have for almost every day since California). The rider whose letter I read sounded miserable. I guess I can’t be thankful enough for having such an amazing team.
